Local Events for the Foodie in You: Week of December 19th!

Christmas is finally upon us, well not finally I guess, seemed to really sneak up on me! Luckily I did my shopping early but this week is definitely going to be hectic. Tomorrow is my handsome man, Jared’s birthday! We’re going out for a nice dinner and then I got him tickets to see the Knicks play on Wednesday. After that it’ll be baking central in Lacy’s Apt! I can’t wait to get home & see the fam. It’s tough not seeing them all the time like I used to, so I really enjoy being home for the holidays. All that being said there are still a TON of events going on this week leading up to and on Christmas day…Happy Holidays all! 🙂

Dec 19 – 3rd Annual Latke Festival & Cook-Off at BAM, 30 Lafayette Ave. (bt. Ashland Pl & St Felix St) from 6:30-9pm. Like latkes? Then you’ll love the Latke Festival & Cook-Off! BAM is hosting the 3rd annual foodie fest, featuring NYC’s top chefs and one lucky Edible Brooklyn reader competing in a throw down of classic and contemporary latkes. Pick up scrumptious potato pancakes from restaurants like Kutsher’s Tribeca, Veselka Bowery, Toloache and more. The fried fare will be judged by a panel of food experts and notable personalities, like Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. The Christmas Cookie Box at Ger-Nis Culinary & Herb Center, 540 President St, Ste. 2E (bt. 3rd & 4th Ave) from 6:30-9:30pm. Wanna get on the nice list this year? The Ger-Nis Center will help you get in Santa’s good graces with the Christmas Cookie Box baking class! With pastry chef Ashton Keefe as your guide, you will learn how to make a slew of sweet treats from all over the world. Some recipes will be simple and some complex, but all will be super yummy! You’ll bake up holiday confections like cinnamon stars, molasses sugar cookies, coconut macaroons, classic gingerbread men and more. Yum! Grab a $65 ticket here. Dec 20 – Southern Tier @ Rattle N Hum, 14 E. 33rd St. (@ 5th Ave), starting at 5pm. Toast Tuesday with a few pints of brew at Rattle N Hum! The Southern Tier Brewing Co. is taking over a dozen taps at the Murray Hill beer bar, pouring out pints of their yummiest brews like Crème Brulee, Choklat, Raspberry Wheat, Pumpking, Mokah and more! Sure, you can just get one, but what’s the fun in that? Opt for Rattle’s great beer flight and try them all instead!

Rock Your Stockings Off: Holiday Music & Eggnog Festival at the Knitting Factory, 361 Metropolitan Ave. (@ Havemeyer St) at 8pm. Like eggnog? How about eggnog with Sailor Jerry Rum, holiday carols and a great cause?! This 2nd annual variety show will rocks all four with Christmas carols courtesy of the Gotham Rock Choir, the Beauty Shop Quartet and other ensembles. You can join in the fun by belting out your fave holiday tunes during the sing-a-long, or simply sit back and snack on cookies and eggnog. Grab a ticket here—proceeds will benefit the Children’s Aid Society, which helps children in poverty.

The JCC in Manhattan’s Annual Chanukah Soiree at The Grisly Pear, 107 MacDougal St. (Bt. Bleecker St. & Minetta Ln) from 8:30pm-12am. Come celebrate Chanukah at the Grisly Pear! The JCC’s annual Chanukah soiree is moving to the West Village for a night of fun festivities! Grab drinks at the open bar or take a bartending lessons with Grisly Pear’s owner and learn to pour potables of your own. Brooklyn Brewery’s beer buff Dan Moss will be on hand to present delish beer pairings to compliment Chef Russell Moss’s daring latke creations (ex: kale and carrot latkes with a hops-heavy reduction. Yum!). Rabbi-in-Residence Dan Ain will also be available to help answer any and all of your “December dilemma” questions. The formerly wholesome ladies of Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad are getting naughty at their 8th annual Xmas Eve bash! Hosted by The Goddess Perlman, the vaudeville extravaganza features comedy, music and burlesque, all performed by bold, badass Jewish chicks. Expect tap-dancing dreidels, an Israeli-dance striptease, strong feminist undertones and a heavy-handed dose of camp. Oh yeah, and hot, hilarious ladies like Jena Friedman, Rena Zager, Hilary Schwartz, Minnie Tonka and more! A $20 ticket gets you not only the show, but also a wine/beer and nosh reception! L’Chaim!

Keeping with Italian custom, the restaurant is cooking up its very own Feast of Seven Fishes, a traditional Christmas Eve seafood dinner normally eaten after Midnight Mass. Chef Bart Retolatto’s prepped an eight-course edible extravaganza, complete with crab-stuffed ravioli, pan-seared sea scallops, linguine con arogosta, a classic Adriatic seafood stew, and more! The special holiday menu is $75 per person, but really, dishes these delicious are priceless! Mangia!

Christmas Prix Fixe @ Alfama, 214 E. 52nd St (bt. 2nd & 3rd Ave) from 2-10pm. Feliz Natal! Celebrate Christmas with a delicious four-course Portuguese prix-fixe at Alfama today! Executive Chef Francisco Rosa will be cooking up a festive feast featuring chourico and collard green soup, deep-fried octopus, venison tenderloin and a Portuguese dessert buffet with traditional treats like sonhos (cinnamon donuts), rice pudding, fruit tartelletes, sweet breads and more.     New York is the ultimate melting pot! I see a lot of celebrations on that list for several different cultures. Not only that all the different types of food, from Latkes to dosas-yum!
    Happy birthday to your special guy and sweet of you to get him tickets to the Nicks! May you both as well as your families experience all the love and joy that the Christmas season has to offer! Enjoy!
